Exploring Porto’s Café Scene: A Review of Nave

Finding a good café in Porto is always exciting, especially in the vibrant Bonfim area, where both locals and tourists roam. This time, I visited Nave - Coffee & Family, a spacious café with a unique blend of features, including a backyard, a small shoe store, and even a play area for kids. While the atmosphere was inviting, the coffee and service left room for improvement.

Atmosphere & Ambiance

The café has a spacious interior with a cozy backyard featuring a grassy area, tables, and a barbecue setup—ideal for sunny days. The decor and lighting create a relaxed vibe, and seating options range from regular chairs to comfortable benches.

A unique aspect of this café is its mini shoe shop inside, along with a children’s play area. While the play area is a great addition for families, the toys were noticeably worn out. Despite this, it was a welcome feature for parents looking for a kid-friendly café in Porto.

One surprising aspect was the lack of background music—the dominant sound was customer conversations. While this might appeal to those looking for a quiet spot to work, a soft, well-curated playlist could significantly enhance the ambiance.

Menu & Drink Quality

The café offers a diverse menu, including:

Visually, the drinks were well-presented, but quality was inconsistent. My hot chocolate and cappuccino were lukewarm upon arrival, and the tea was served in basic tea bags, which felt underwhelming for a specialty café. The iced coffee was an exception—it had a bold coffee base and a single large ice cube, making it refreshing.

Service & Pricing

The staff was friendly and professional, but service was slow. Drinks arrived in a staggered manner, meaning some had cooled down before everyone received their order. Pricing was on the medium  side, but given the drink quality, it didn’t feel entirely justified.
